So, you want to start streaming? Part 4A (Forwarding PS4 audio)

The Line In Port.

The Line In Port.

In the final part of this guide we will explore some other things that you can do to separate yourself from the countless people who are aspiring to do the exact same thing you are trying to do. This post talks about how to forward your audio from your PS4 into your PC so you can stream from your computer instead of using the cumbersome twitch app on the PS4. For this you will need to have a standard 3.5mm aux cable as well as a LINE IN port (Colored light blue) on your computer. On your PC right click the volume icon in your taskbar, and select Sounds. From there go to the Recording and right click Line In and go to Properties. In the first General tab, make sure under Device Usage make sure it says Use this device (enable). Click the Listen tab and click the checkbox to listen to the device. Lastly, make sure that the default playback device is set to whatever you use as your output device (your headphones). Plug the headphone cable into your PS4 controller and put the other end into the LINE IN port. When you play your PS4, the audio should be playing through your headphones, which means that you now can stream through your PC. Unfortunately, I do not have an Xbox One to validate this method for that console so I will advise that you check out this video to help you out (note that even though it says to play through speakers, just replace that with your headphones). You can buy headphone cables here. In the next post, we will explore overlays and how to make your own custom overlays, or how to find pre-made overlays to suit your needs.

This part of the guide will focus on the process of creating your content! If you are just streaming, you will need a video capture program. This program will allow you to “capture” the content on your monitor and allow you to stream. OBS is a recommended program to use for this because all of its features are free, which makes it easy to pick up and start streaming. Xsplit is another option for starting off but you must purchase a license to unlock its advanced features. Note that OBS and Xsplit have the same functions though Xsplit is a bit easier to use. Once you choose your capture program of choice, you need to acquire something that is called the stream key for your channel. The stream key allows you to broadcast to the streaming service of your choice. Be careful though, If anyone gets access to your key, they will be able to stream as you.

The choice of what video editor to use is one that is dependent on what your preferences. If you are on a PC, you have the option to use an editor such as Premiere pro, Sony Vegas, and Avid video editor. Note that all of these (with the exception of Vegas) are available on the Mac as well. There is also my personal favorite, Final Cut Pro X (or FCPX for short). FCPX is only available on the mac and you will need to spend quite a bit to make sure that you get a machine that will allow you to edit at peak efficiency (though FCPX does a decent job even on underpowered macs, if you’re willing to have patience with it). I personally like the workflows that Final Cut Pro provides me and it is very easy to pick up and get to editing immediately. In addition, I find it easier to learn how to do new things in the program in a way thats more intuitive than the other editors. Regardless of what editor you use, you will need to take time to properly invest in learning how to use whichever editor you decide to go with. Once you understand how the editor works and your preferred workflow, you can then start learning how to do advanced things such as creating your own effects and transitions in programs such as After Effects, or tweaking existing effects to your liking. Once you start the process of making videos, what you end up with is totally up to your imagination. The Sky is the limit!

At this point you should be armed with all the requeisite information needed to get your own channel up and running in no time. I will provide links below to all editors mentioned as well as other things I touched on in this section. Part 4 will explore little things you can do once you get properly setup to help take your production to the next level.
